Dear friends,

Last month our friend Brian Galaviz became a victim of police brutality and racial profiling. Brian is an amazing educator and activist and has worked for years alongside many of us – showing up at our fundraisers, marches, and events – and supporting young people and others who are the most vulnerable in our communities. In the past 7 years in Chicago, Brian has become an integral member of many movements – teacher unionization and worker’s rights, immigrant justice, anti-militarization organizing, anti-prison and LGBTQ justice work. Thoughtful, hard working, and kind, Brian is one of the people many of us can count on to make events happen, to raise hard questions at public forums, to show up to our events with friends and young people, to DJ our fundraiser for free, and to press back on power when it matters most.

Brian was at a party when the cops entered the backyard, and Brian approached them to speak – in a non-confrontational manner. Brian was then choked by police officers as he was dragged to the alley where he was hit and choked again by the arresting officer. He was arrested at the party, processed, and spent the night at 26th and California. Falsely accused of pushing and punching a police officer, Brian is now facing a felony charge of aggravated battery of a peace officer. The preliminary hearing occurred a few weeks ago and the case will go to trial.

This is an example of police brutality and racial profiling.

He needs resources to get a good lawyer, which will cost around $10, 000.
His full time job as a mentor at an alternative school in Humboldt Park will not cover the cost of a lawyer. He needs help from us.

On March 6th, 2011, my cousin, Nathan, jumped into freezing cold Lake Michigan to raise money for Chicago's summer Special Olympics. Just imagination yourself jumping into the lake after months of it freezing over a few times. For any brave soul that jumped into the lake, man, you are dumb, but it's all for the Special Olympics. I guess this is the new St. Patty's tradition since the South-Side Irish Parade has been shut down.

A lot of photo are pretty gross (at least to me), but for those of you who like this kind of stuff, enjoy!

2011 Chicago's Mayoral Election Coverage

Last week Tuesday, I covered the Del Valle election night party over at Revolution Brew in Logan Square.

I'd say out of the 6 candidates, Del Valle would be my choice for mayor. After so many years of corruption in Chicago, an honest man doesn't sound all too bad. Though, I know that an asshole is needed for any job to get done. I'm afraid with Rahm, though some taxes will be lowered, other taxes will rise. The man doesn't seem like he cares for community efforts, just big names and the money that flows in and out of the city. Yes, money is important to the city, but community organizing is just as important. We need to keep our neighborhoods safe, give our kids a good education, and the feeling of support from one another.

One good thing about Rahm is at least, I think I'll have a better chance at getting hired as an police officer. anywho, congrats to Rahm, and maybe next time Del Valle.

i'm addicted to collecting records.

two weeks ago, i went to out of the past for a 5 hour dig. this week i went to beverly records for a combined 3 hour dig. and i plan on going back. there is something about looking for music in a physical form. then going home, and listening to them one by one.

it's also nice that beverly has a bargin bin that is extra cheap, 'buy 10 or more 12" for a buck each' and '5 for $1 45s'. And out of the Out of the Past are just nice folks and will drop prices with the more you buy.

a month ago i went out to bogota, colombia to visit a friend, paloma. it certainly was an experience, i just hoped for more.

on january 7th, i flew out from ohare to georgia to transfer my flight out to bogota.

the last time i saw a sky like this was in amarillo texas. the beautiful of nature is therapy like no other.

initially, when i got off the plane, i could smell the pollution. the beautiful smell of pollution, the same smell i get when i travel to hong kong. it brought back fond memories, and it made me miss hong kong. beside, the nostalgic scent, i thought it was interesting to see the pat downs of cargo staff.

after over an hour of waiting in line at immigration, i finally reached the doors that led me to paloma and her very kind parents. i was extremely excited to see her, and as she was me; her first suggested experience for me in bogota was to go to a small gathering at her friend's place. which is where i drank, smoked, and got to meet a lot of her friends.

since my flight to bogota was in the evening, i couldn't really get a good view or feel of the city. to be honest, it didn't feel any different than being in states, except that everyone spoke spanish, or had an accent that accompanied their english.

well, when i woke up in the morning, i woke up to the view above. not bad i'd say. nice green mountains. mountains without snow caps; they're like extremely large rolling hills.

so all within 24 hours, i tried my first colombian beer, cigarettes, and coffee. all i must say is extremely delicious.

the above photo, is of "zona t", which means t-zone. it's the area of the "hip" joints and go to places. basically chicago's viagra triangle. it has nice upscale bars, lounges, cafes, restaurants, and shopping. though i spent some time in this area, it's funny to say, i don't think i spent more than an hour at any of the establishments. many cafes and bars had outdoor seatings. though i did eat in a colombian chain restaurant, crepes and waffles, but my state of mind was definitely not there.

a few repetitive things i noticed about bogota, military/police, cabbies, and catholicism. they all were everywhere.

reuniting with folks you thought have changed sometimes doesn't work out as much as you hoped, sometimes not at all. instead it revives your childish ways and things are back to how you escaped them.

recalling memories, my mother use to sing "underneath mango tree" when doing work around the home. humming it, singing it. she said it's a song that they use to sing when she was in burma. now, whenever i hear this song, i feel nostalgic. i can envision my sun filled house (before my father decided tear it apart and remodel it to his liking), and i am sitting at our over sized dining room table and my mom adjacent to me, doing the dishes. after i was twelve, or so, i rarely ever heard my mom singing it. then again, that's when i rarely saw her or anyone. days when i just wanted to escape.

i feel i should update on what's going on in my life/head.

anywho, well starting off with my final projects. i didn't do the mural thing, i changed my mind about 3 times and decided to do it on my mom's surgery scars. since they a bit personal, i ain't going to post them on the web...

as far as soul sauce, it's continuing! maybe not for long, not enough folks roll through. it's unfortunate, but at least limbs and i play each other, and our friends, awesome soulful tracks. so if you are reading this, come to one! there is one every 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month. Soul Sauce #6 is happening tomorrow at Risque Cafe!

DD30 was awesome. staff delegations went smooth, no problems at the track, and no photos from me...

DDBeta at Rantoul was interesting, it's was like basically a huge parking lot with a hangar in the background.

i did take photos at one party, but man, underground party scene for me... i can't even stand to be in the environment for more than a minute. the myour house scarred me, i don't know if it's a good thing, or a bad thing. probably a good thing...

so it's summer time... we shall see what adventures await me!

So I ended up not doing the mural thing for my final project. I did go around taking photos of 15 different photos, but because of some places where the murals were so big and the area for me to take the photo of them were so narrow, I had to take sections of them and photoshop back together. I started shoot pretty late, and these murals take forever to sew together. I decided to do a project about my mom's pain. Which I am sure my teacher will absolute love, because it has so much content and meaning in them (GAG!).

imma post crap that has been going on for the past month.

i've been working on final projects, murals around chicago. since daley has his anti-public art policy, i've decided to capture what I can before they go down (the mayor and his crew are pretty adamant about it) . my teacher isn't too hot about this idea, but I think it's great since i don't see many folks documenting the talent in and around chicago, only in NYC, LA and foreign places ie. london.

I had a fundraiser/birthday party. Fundraiser was for Heiruspecs' band memner, Muad'Dib, unfortunately we didn't raise all too much money. I believe one reason was because I had an ass of a friend who wouldn't watch the door for me for pay and free drink... piece of shit mother fucker...

I definitely would like to thank everyone who showed up though, it was pretty fun and great!

DJ Limb's got his own dance party thing going on now at the Redline Tap, The Booty Caboose! It was an exciting and fun party. I met an old man who had some interesting stories on Myanmar.

I actually started DJing with Limbs at Risque Cafe. Our gig is called 'Soul Sauce', where we play soul all night every 2nd and 4th friday of the month. So far we done 2 gigs, and I love it!

Then I recently went to Urbana Champaign for the first time in my life with Limbs and Erika. It was for a breakdancing competition, IL Breaks 7. YUP! it was tons fun, I felt like I was in the movies the whole night, then when the morning came, I felt like I was at Drift Day for some reason, mustve been all the testosterone.

Oh yes, Rob came in from Japan. It was great seeing him. Crab and Pam got married. I also designed a flier for Drift Day 30, W00T!

Then I am documenting an Asian-American Showcase tonight at the Abbey Pub, Declare Indie 3.

Tomorrow I am off to DETROIT! To visit my girl, Kristine!!

probably about a year or so ago, i was bored one day and decided to drive south. mainly it was to look for a different drift spots. Since i've been told there aren't as many cops on the southside, and i know there are plenty of vacant areas, i thought it was probably a good place to drift. so i took some familiar routes, then some not so familiar routes. driving towards the river on 95th and seeing the pretty lights from the skyway, i saw a little shack. a little shack that sold smoked fish. i thought it sounded good and i've been wanting to try it since.

after seeing the little shack on anthony bourdain's show, no reservations chicago's edition, i finally got some calumet fisheries, must i say this place is delicious. I recommend chub, pepper garlic smoked salmon, and breaded scallop.

i really love chub. as a kid, it always reminded me of yogi bear...

i saw this on dj limbs' blog. first i thought it was a joke, then i was really paying attention, then i decided to look this guy up.

it's not a joke, this dude really is singing in japanese, enka style. his grandmother, who is japanese, influenced him in the japanese culture, and he has been singing enka since he was 6. now he is pretty popular in japan, therefore it's not a joke. i think he is awesome.

Keeping Busy Busy, Busy Bee!

for the past few weeks, my right wrist has been asking for a vacation. with all weekly parties, taking pictures and trying to party at the same time, it just needed a break! i decided to setup two non-hand held camera weekends, and the destination, Detroit. For the two weekends, i will be using a 4x5 large format camera i rented out from school. so far this past weekend, my wrist really appreciated it and also would like to thank Nic Notion for taking over the DSLR.

actually, the main purpose of going to detroit is to work on my finals for my View Camera and Studio I class. The project is suppose to capture Detroit's hip hop community. From what I got, it's more of artists around detroit and the area of detroit they represent.

the first party i'll be at is a fundraiser event; proceeds from the bar and donation jars are going to tropical storm relief out in the Philippines. Donation bonuses for every thousand dropped at the bar. this party will be at between lounge, 1324 N Milwaukee Ave, and there is no cover!

The second one will be at the Myour House, 3329 S Indiana Ave,and it's a costume party! best part is it's an 18 and up party, so for those babies that need a place to party, this is it!

it's gonna be a halloween disco party, discounted entrance with chromeo stub and if you are dressed up in costume. This is a new spot for me, but it should be fun! 431 N Wolcott, 18 and up; IDs are mandatory!

First weekend, i headed out there with the Myour House girls.

Friday, when we arrived, first thing we did was scoop up Nic Notion and met up with Quelle and Mars. We headed out to Eastern Market for a little party. Unfortunately, as I grabbed my camera out of my bag, I realized I forgot the battery. I did bring the film camera, but those photos will take some time to post up.

Most of the weekend was a blurr, it was all hanging out until Saturday night. We all went to the Benefits for Hex Murda show, who had Slum Village, Trick Trick, Rude Jude, The Alchemist, Danny Brown, and other fun loving hip hop artist performing just to gather a crowd to support Hex Murda's medical bills.

The second time around, I went to visit my dear friend Kristine. Too bad I couldn't stay the entire weekend. Instead I came back to work a party that got busted. Anywho, I did have an awesome time hanging out at proof seeing a bum stripping in the window for some unfortunate ladies. then going to Northern Lights to see a bus boy grooving to some funky beats! And they actually had a disco ball going!
